Canada co-ordinating tariff attack on United States with EU

Pork-exporting Iowa is one example of a state that could be hurt by the Trump administration's decision and the ensuing tit-for-tat measures.

O'Neil said that even the non-agricultural goods that make up the EU, Canadian, and Mexican tariffs lists are created to send a message.

Both men however voiced anger over Trump's imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs against close allies, supposedly on "national security" grounds.

"When you're saying that President Trump doesn't really care, perhaps that's the case. But no one lives for ever", Macron responded. The focus on pork also serves to make a political statement: According to Census Bureau data, 10 out of the top 15 states for pork exports to Mexico voted for Trump in the 2016 election.

Macron was even more emphatic, calling on the other G7 members to resist what he warned was a potential United States drift towards "further isolationism and "crude hegemony".

"There's no question that on trade, on climate change, on some other issues there will be differences of perspective", he said. That will also possibly mean increased supply in the US domestic market, leading to a reduction in prices in supermarkets, but farmers are likely going to be an unhappy lot.

"Trump is trying to fix this broken system". In addition, China would buy more US crude oil and natural gas exports to quench its thirst for energy.

There is no doubt, though, that Trudeau is upset that the USA would invoke security concerns as justification for the tariffs.

"It does not detract from the friendship we have for each other and the friendship between our two countries", he said. "We have to maintain these ties".

In a radio interview this morning, foreign trade undersecretary Juan Carlos Baker rejected any claim that the tariffs amount to revenge on the United States, charging instead that Mexico was simply acting within its rights. Publicly posting the list of products that could face retaliatory tariffs, she said, also attracts attention from American industry and officials.

The War of 1812 was a conflict fought between U.S. and United Kingdom and their respective allies, when the White House was burnt down by the British. He re-imposed sanctions against companies doing business with Iran.

The G7 summit was supposed to be Trudeau's moment for Canada to shine on the world stage.

Mr Trump, who has vowed to protect USA industry and workers from what he describes as unfair global competition as part of an "America First" agenda, is due to hold bilateral meetings with Mr Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron during the summit, Mr Kudlow said.

"We may have tactical disagreements, but he has always said - and I agree - tariffs are a tool in that effort". He announced that the two nations would collaborate on initiatives on artificial intelligence.
