Both parties have candidates running in 14 of the 15 state senate races.

A fourth potential lockout emerged on election night in California's Central Valley, a district that is 40% Hispanic and which Clinton won by 3 percentage points.

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - TUESDAY, JUNE 5, 2018: California Republican gubernatorial candidate John Cox addresses supporters at his California Primary election night party at the U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego, Calif., on June 5, 2018.

When asked whether Republicans are anxious they'll lose its majority in November, Denham said no. But that seemed to be more of a typical presidential boast than a realistic analysis of the California results. "It was Gavin Newsom and the Democrats".

Primaries in eight states ended Tuesday night, further setting the stage for the midterms this November, but some of the races won't be decided for a while.

If she wins, the 28-year-old Dubuque native will be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. Finkenauer is now finishing her second term representing Iowa House District 99.

"We are going to take this state and we are going to make it livable and affordable", he said Wednesday on Fox Business Network.

Neither party immediately appeared to suffer major setbacks.

"The Democrats just spent $10 million trying to shut us out and they didn't shut us out", he told reporters. The GOP wants to saddle Democrats who run the state with responsibility for rising crime rates, growing income inequality, high taxes and immigration problems.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, the state's first female governor, fended off three GOP challengers for a governor nomination, while South Dakota's Kristi Noem became the first female nominee for governor in her state as well.

California's Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat, also fared well, fending off challenges from the left.

In Montana, Democrat Kathleen Williams beat two men with much deeper campaign pockets to advance to a key November race against an incumbent House Republican. There were so many Democrats running that, they feared, Republicans could finish 1-2 in the primary and nail down wins. Across the country Democrats need to flip 23 seats to secure a House majority.

All 150 seats in the Texas state house are up for election this year, and 15 of the 31 state senate seats are up as well. Keep in mind, for instance, that there is now a Democratic senator from Alabama because the state's Republican Party could not figure out how to prevent its voters from backing an accused child molester, Roy Moore.

Representative Martha Roby of Alabama withdrew her endorsement of Trump weeks before the election, following the Access Hollywood Tape.

But he faces a tough slog convincing voters that they should cast their lot with a Republican in a state where the party's support has eroded and Democrats routinely win every statewide election.

On a smaller scale, Democrats also had a good day in Iowa.

If Grisham wins, she'd be the state's second Latino state executive and the first Latino Democrat governor.

It appears to be a rising red tide in a very blue ocean.

Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker won his primary contest as did New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat who faced federal bribery charges previous year. "Republicans are having to explain about the President", said Mr Ben Ray Luján, who leads the House mid-term effort.

Menendez's opponent in November will be Republican businessman Bob Hugin, who won 75 percent in his primary. Ed Royce and Darrell Issa are retiring, respectively and the 48th district, where Rep. Dana Rohrbacher is running for a 16 term but is plagued by controversial ties to Russian Federation. While the prospects of the Democrats in the other two districts are still too close to officially call, one Democratic strategist, speaking anonymously because no races had been called, expressed confidence shut-outs had been avoided in all three races. "So now it is how these things play out", said Jefrey Pollock, a Democratic pollster at the Global Strategy Group, which has been working on congressional races.

John Cox, a Republican candidate for governor, recieved the backing of Donald Trump, but that support could hurt him in the winner-take-all race in November.

A voter arrives at a polling station in Davenport, Iowa, wehre farmer loyalty for Donald Trump looks like it's starting to waver over tariff disputers with countries that import American crops.
