Final preparations under way for Trump-Kim summit

11 Juin 2018

President Donald Trump plans to depart early from his unprecedented summit with Kim Jong Un, the White House said Monday, declaring that nuclear talks with North Korea have moved "more quickly than expected".

After concluding the summit, Trump planned to speak to reporters in Singapore before flying home, the White House said. Create peace and great prosperity for his land.

The clearest benchmarks about what the seeking from the summit, however, have come from Pompeo rather than Trump. It's where former Chinese President Hu Jin Tao stayed during the 2009 APEC Summit (and don't tell Trump, but Hillary Clinton stayed there in 2011, too).

Unlike most other publications, USA Today had a different outlook of the Trump-Kim meeting.

Trump himself seemed optimistic as well.

"It's about attitude", Trump said. He said the summit will lay the ground work for the "hard work" ahead.

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon nuclear weapons.

Preliminary meetings have already begun.

While President Trump has spoken positively about the upcoming summit, he has been vague on details of what they might be able to actually achieve. Today, we start with a behind the scenes of the summit.

The jet carrying Kim landed at the airport Sunday afternoon amid huge security precautions on this city-state island. The leaders are spending the night at hotels about a half-mile apart in the upscale shopping area in Tanglin.

The rare public appearance of Kim, waving and smiling to onlookers, adds to the more affable image of the young leader that has emerged since his summit in April with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in. Two other aircrafts, one carrying several "essential" items for Kim such as a bullet-proof limousine and portable toilet, also departed within the same hour as the one carrying Kim. Singapore's reputation for rigid law and order was seen as a major factor for being chosen to host Tuesday's summit. The president also refused to sign a G-7 joint statement pledging cooperation.

North Korea had also threatened to strike Guam, an American territory in the Pacific Ocean.

It is no easy task. The talks are expected to focus at least in part on an eventual deal to dismantle North Korea's nuclear program.

The best-case scenario is a return to the era of insults, threats and occasional skirmishes between North and South Korea.

Exuding confidence, Trump said he has done relatively little formal preparation.

"North Korea has been preparing for this meeting for this meeting for 45 years", he said. He said last week that he expects to know "within the first minute" of their meeting if Kim is serious about giving up his weapons. "Just my touch, my feel". "He's not kidding when he says this and he will walk away ... and I believe that Kim is smart enough to know that". "But I really feel confident".
