Trump Renews Defense of North Korea Agreement

17 Juin 2018

When Bret Baier pointed out Kim's regime imprisons, tortures and murders his own people, Trump replied, yeah, but so have other people done some really bad things.

The British prime minister once counseled, "Everyone likes flattery; and when you come to Royalty you should lay it on with a trowel". So he's a very smart guy.

Predictably, Trump is being scourged for this. Both gushed over "Uncle Joe".

Trump earlier in the week declared the media to be "our country's biggest enemy", and he has repeatedly voiced his desire to punish journalists who air criticisms of him.

But at a time when Mr. Trump is also going after allies on trade issues, the longer-term worry is that the bonds that have long secured America's role as a leader in the region are steadily weakening.

"Our definition of denuclearization is they give up all their fissile material, facilities, nuclear material taken out, irrevocably and verifiably", says Jung Pak, top Korea expert at the Brookings Institution and a former senior CIA Korea analyst. "But more importantly than the document I have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un". But peace has a cost and, given the current USA narrative that seeks to avoid foreign entanglement and is fed up with spending money on worldwide commitments, it will require the United States to manage its shaky alliances if this is to be a realistic prospect. That black cloud has passed over.

Donald Trump has not shied away from sharing his newfound admiration for Kim Jong-Un after months of tweeting insults at the North Korean leader, saying that he now has a dedicated phone line for Kim to call whenever he needs to talk. In recent weeks he was welcomed to Beijing and Seoul, and invited to Moscow.

"People are shocked", the president continued.

It is unlikely Kim will be retreating back into the cloisters of the Hermit Kingdom after being courted by the world's foremost powers.

By using this language - and ending joint exercises - Trump acceded to Kim's game plan.

Kim has not yet taken any concrete step to dismantle his nuclear programs. In 2017, the United States imposed sanctions on the country because of its "flagrant" abuse of human rights.

Moon said South Korea would carefully consider joint military drills with the USA and he asked his officials to co-operate with the USA on the issue, his office said in a statement at the time.

North Korea had returned American hostages and destroyed a nuclear test site prior to the meeting as gestures of good faith.

Here is where the crunch comes. "I gave him a very direct number".

Trump claimed there was "a coordinated effort" among news outlets to insist that Trump gave up "sooo much" in the negotiation process by meeting with Kim, and he said they focus on this point because they have nothing else to criticize.

Bannon suggested that Republican members of Congress should be touting Trump's North Korea summit rather than criticizing its outcome.

"This is exactly what they want to see: the United States doing less militarily in northeast Asia", said Michael Fuchs, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress who was a deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs in the Obama administration.

If the Singapore meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un had been a zero-sum game, then Trump definitely lost.

He is also scheduled to meet with senior USA officials and lawmakers.
