Hirving Lozano goal vs Germany sparks natural disaster in Mexico

The Selecao side of 1970 is regarded as one of the greatest ever football teams, but despite boasting names such as Rivelino and Jairzinho in their XI four years later, there was no way through the Yugoslavia back line.

With talk back home of a "historic victory" and sombrero-wearing supporters brightening and deafening the summer streets of Moscow, Mexico can dream of going better than a consistent record of reaching the last 16 of the last six World Cups and a couple of quarter-finals.

Undaunted by their opposition, Mexico adopted a thrilling, attack-minded approach, continually threatening the German defense. Picking a top two from Group F just became a lot harder.

Mexico had only beaten Germany once in 11 previous meetings - a 1985 friendly - but produced a superb performance in Moscow.

Lozano's goal set off such a commotion that seismic detectors in Mexico City registered a false quake, which the geological institute said may have been generated by "massive jumps" across the city. The Germany manager is said to be unhappy with his decision to meet with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Ozil also has more competition for places in the German team than in recent years.

"The game against Saudi Arabia was actually a wake-up call".

With Jogi Low's side seen by many as the favourites to leave Russian Federation with the trophy, the pressure is certainly on for the 2014 champions to complete that rarest of feats by retaining the famous cup.

Yet there were no audible signs of discontent from the sizable German contingent in the crowd.

Those two contrasting moods seemed evident in opening exchanges, as Germany appeared somewhat sluggish and labored.

In a central-midfield trio, Miguel Layun, Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado will look form an industrious and effective trident to support Mexico's star-studded line-up in the final third.

The resulting corner caused panic in the Germany box, before a grateful Manuel Neuer pounced on the ball.

A remarkably open start saw Timo Werner sprint in behind the Mexico defence before dragging across the face of goal, while Mats Hummels shot straight at Guillermo Ochoa after a botched clearance.

Sami Khedira and Toni Kroos looked a pale shadow of the pivot that dominated the 2014 World Cup, while Thomas Muller and Mesut Ozil struggled against a compact defence. Marco Reus did come on latter to switch things up, but the attacking build-up in the first half was tedious and lacked speed and imagination.

Juan Carlos Osorio's side dispensed with the niceties as they followed a simple game plan and stuck to it; get behind the German lines and hit them on the counter, the goals would follow.

Being a shrewd campaigner, Lozano is also good at heading the ball and shooting the ball from distance.
