India Kashmir: Direct rule imposed after BJP quits alliance

20 Juin 2018

Asked why the saffron party entered into an alliance with the PDP if this had to be its fate, the BJP national general secretary said, "We had to respect the mandate of the people".

The BJP gave two main reasons for quitting the alliance: the deteriorating law and order situation in Indian-administered Kashmir, and the lack of development in other parts of the state. But in March 1986, the Congress withdrew support from Shah paving the way for another spell of Governor's Rule. The killing of Rising Kashmir's editor Shujaat Bukhari seems to have hastened the breakdown. The Jammu region is largely Hindu, while Ladakh is predominantly Buddhist. Our party chief had said this alliance would not work out.

"The President has approved imposition of Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect." a Union Home Ministry spokesman said in New Delhi in the morning.

The BJP said the three-year alliance had become "untenable" in the wake of increasing violence.

He added that since assuming office in the state, Mehbooba Mufti as the chief minister remained in the forefront to ensure in every way that the people of Kashmir are accorded due rights and a dignified living. "It was a decision that was taken keeping in mind those people in Kashmir who wanted peace and wanted to celebrate the pious month of Ramzan in its true spirit", he said. "We have now come out of the government". A few senior PDP ministers followed her and there was a brief meeting at her residence, following which she submitted her resignation to the governor. BJP has 25 seats in J&K Assembly while PDP has 28, National Conference has 15, Congress 12, and others have Six (including Two Nominated).

Over 4,000 first information reports against 14,315 stone pelters have been registered during the last three years in the state, according to this reply to the J&K legislative council on February 7, 2018. Anti-terror operations would resume in full force, Singh said on Sunday. "She wants to spend time with her family right now", said the source. The PDP did not agree to it which established the point of no return.

"The situation will return to normalcy once dialogue is started but the GoI has practically not shown any keen interest except political statements", said a senior PDP leader. In past months there have been several outbreaks of violence. He said like the NC, the PDP was also caught by surprise, adding that his offer to the PDP to form government was one time offer and that expired the day the BJP and PDP formed the govt.

When the alliance was forged between then PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and the BJP, numerous party's supporters saw it as a betrayal of its people and backers.

The coalition government was formed in 2015 after extended and hard negotiations, since the two parties hold diametrically opposed views on many major issues, including the law that exempts Indian military personnel from criminal prosecution in the violence-wracked Himalayan region.
