AMC Theaters unveils movie subscriptions for moviegoers

24 Juin 2018

Who's excited for Stubs A-List? No 3D and no IMAX. Tickets may be purchased or through the AMC smartphone app.

Unlike MoviePass, AMC Stubs A-List lets members see movies in any format - including in the premium Dolby Cinema at AMC.

And no one puts AMC in the front row aisle seat. Weeks run from Friday to Thursday and unused movie tickets don't roll over.

Though Lowe had a positive tone, MoviePass' Twitter handle didn't seem so welcoming that AMC was "jumping on board the movie subscription train".

Since 2002, movie theater ticket prices have increased by 54 percent, and ticket sales have dropped by 22 percent.

"While we know after our study and research that our program features will have significant consumer appeal, admittedly AMC Stubs A-List is being taken to market at more than double the price of that charged by some of our competitors", Aron said on the call.

AMC's announcement comes on the heels of MoviePass' financial woes and escalating tensions between the two companies. For example, you can only see a standard, 2D movie.

MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe said he was anxious AMC's negative stance would hurt how people see MoviePass, the Deseret News reported. Also, for the movies I love, I generally want IMAX 3D.

There are other perks that come with AMC Stubs A-List membership. "Any movie. Any day", according to their website. For example: Under the new rule, a movie like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom would cost you another $2 on top of the $9.99 monthly subscription cost. You won't be charged any surplus fees beyond the $19.95 subscription fee. According to the company, MoviePass is accepted at more than 91 percent of theaters nationwide, including AMC Theatres.

Is this the future of the theater-going experience?

For one, it's not available everywhere. Additionally, users can't see the same movie a few times, Slash Gear reported.

Both services also differ in how people can access the movies they want to see.

Starting in July, you might have to pay a little extra to see the newest blockbusters when using MoviePass . With AMC Stubs, moviegoers can reserve tickets for upcoming movies on their phone, but MoviePass is same day only.

It's not a unique business model: Uber, which is also losing money, is predicated on the same idea that burning cash short-run is worth it to acquire a customer base.

They depend on major partnerships as well. MoviePass has to continue to grow to get bigger and better partnerships, however. MoviePass, on the other hand, hasn't.
