The national spotlight is on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez after her surprising upset in the 2018 primary for New York's 14th congressional district. "I was ecstatic", he said. "The idea that we are not supposed to talk about people dying when they are engaging in political expression just really moved me".
Yet amid the celebrations, and despite Ocasio-Cortez now being the favorite in the November election, her victory also poses some tough questions for the left-and particularly for those who claim to be leaders in the movement. "Always from day one", Ocasio-Cortez said. She said in the past she has "worked with expectant mothers, waited tables, and led classrooms".
"Vote her in next, Massachusetts", Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "She just has this energy that's so motivated and ready just to work and make things happen", Vahedi says.
She also challenged the conventional wisdom that Democrats need to take massive donations from corporations in order to win. Ocasio-Cortez has promised to represent working families and work towards lowering rent, increasing incomes and ensuring healthcare is accessible to more people.
"I would support impeachment", she told CNN. "I wasn't born to a wealthy or powerful family". She championed expanding Medicare for everyone, tuition-free college, criminal justice reform and ending private prisons. She also wants to abolish ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforcement - the Homeland Security division that enforces United States immigration laws. She recently visited an immigration detention center, posting photos of her experience on Twitter. The minimum wage varies by state, but now the federal tipped minimum wage (paid to many restaurant workers) is a meager $2.13 per hour, while the minimum wage is $7.25. Almost 70% of her campaign money came from individual contributions under $200.
Crowley had sent Annabel Palma, a former city councilwoman, to take his place, even though she occasionally confessed not to know Crowleys positions on issues in front of Congress.
"There were a group of us, in the East Elmhurst Corona Democrat club and other community activists I have been working with for years who understood that we would do our part to get rid of Joe Crowley".
On Tuesday night, Sanders, also a democratic socialist, congratulated Ocasio-Cortez. During a televised debate with Ocasio-Cortez less than two weeks before the primary, Crowley argued that "simply abolishing the agency doesn't take it out of the hands of (Attorney General) Jeff Sessions or this president". They said it showed the socialist wing is building in the Democratic Party.
But Ocasio-Cortez's stance on impeachment differs with that of some high-ranking Democrats, especially House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
Ocasio-Cortez and Sullivan were both student speakers at BU's Martin Luther King Jr. "We've got people. They've got money", Ocasio-Cortez said in the ad. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., in NY, but he lost the presidential primary. "Donald Trump saying that young women of color should be in cages on the border and Democrats saying young women of color should be in Congress", Ferguson said.
