Trump's Tweet on Deal With Saudi King Makes Oil Prices Plummet

05 Juillet 2018

Countries participating in the original 2016 accord to reduce supply had removed too much oil from the market and should now add some back, they said in June. Rising gasoline prices could create a political headache for Trump before November mid-term congressional elections by offsetting Republican claims that his tax cuts and rollbacks of federal regulations have helped boost the USA economy.

Trump, however, seems impatient and wants Gulf allies to play ball.

Average prices in the U.S. for unleaded gas, including taxes, averaged $2.83 per gallon for the week ending on June 25.

On the day of the OPEC meeting on June 22, President Trump tweeted again: "Hope OPEC will increase output substantially". US light crude was down 5 cents at $74.10, Reuters reported.

Earlier, the Saudi and Russian energy ministers reiterated their 1 million-barrel-per-day output increase agreement reached last month in Vienna, following Mr Trump's tweet over the weekend that he'd received assurances from the Middle Eastern nation that it could increase production by double that volume. Canadian oil prices are poised to continue their slow, steady march upward next year as shipping bottlenecks ease and USA refiners look north to fill the gap created by decreasing output from Venezuela, according to Deloitte. But those moves may be tempered by an equal desire by the U.S. and other country for stable oil prices. Mazrouei, who serves this year as OPEC's president, said the ready to help ease any supply shortages in cooperation with OPEC. President Trump has always been critical of OPEC and rising oil prices, and the agreement from Saudi Arabia has a broad impact on global oil supply while other nations, like Venezuela, cope with falling production.

Q: How is Trump different?

The move comes two months after US President Donald Trump announced US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. "And yes, we will certainly be requesting that their oil imports go to zero, without question". It sought to cut term volumes from Saudi Arabia for a third month in June after increasing purchases from the USA, raising the risk of a bidding war as competition for American grades intensified.

Q: Can Saudi Arabia make up for OPEC's losses?

There are two key takeaways from the most recent exchange between the world's largest consumer and the world's swing supplier.

A top U.S. State Department official said Washington is aiming to do as much as possible to shut off Iran's oil export revenues. Saudi Arabia now produces some 10 million barrels of crude oil a day. Bringing all those barrels to market could take up to a year, and render OPEC agreements irrelevant. The 12 OPEC members with supply reduction targets increased output by 680,000 bpd compared to May.

"The Trump support base is probably the part of the USA electorate that will be the most sensitive to an increase in US gasoline prices", Halff said.
