Longtime Dem loses to left-wing challenger in primary upset

09 Septembre 2018

Before Election Day, conventional wisdom held that if Capuano won the Democratic primary - as many expected him to - it would be due to his strength in Somerville and other areas outside Boston. Other progressive candidates, including Cimbrelo, had hoped to pull an Ocasio-Cortez-style upset Tuesday night.

An emotional video of her finding out she had won has been shared thousands of times online.

Before introducing the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, she thanked volunteers for creating a "movement" because "the hate coming out of this White House will never be defeated singularly by any one of us, it can only be defeated by a movement".

With no Republican challenger in her district, Pressley's path to Congress this November is clear.

Capuano delivered a brief concession speech congratulating Pressley, saying she will be a good member of Congress, and attributing his loss to anger at what's going on in Washington and a desire for change.

In addition, Boston Mayor Martin Walsh supported Capuano. And apparently the district is just upset with a lot of things.

"Words are easy, every politician has them, and that's fine, and I think in this case it's easy to prove". "They're accustomed to the fact that because they are Democrats, people are going to support them". "This is the way life goes", he said.

Capuano, who is now the fourth incumbent to lose a primary this year, conceded the race shortly before it was officially called by the Associated Press. Plus, he had received the backing of local party officials, the Congressional Black Caucus PAC and even from Deval Patrick, the state's first African-American governor.

When the 44-year-old rising star in the Democratic Party heard the results, she just couldn't believe it.

AN African-American woman on Tuesday pulled off an upset victory in a Democratic primary contest against a 10-term entrenched male incumbent in Boston, the latest sign that insurgent United States candidates from the left are gaining ground.

There is no Republican on the November ballot in the district, meaning Pressley is virtually assured of entering Congress in January.

Like Ms. Ocasio-Cortez's challenge to Rep. Joe Crowley, Ms. Pressley was looking to unseat a white male who'd represented for 20 years a district that was now mostly non-white.

MA senator Elizabeth Warren, a favourite to run in the 2020 Presidential election, was uncontested for the state's Democratic nomination.

Pressley defeated a similarly left-leaning incumbent, which could temper any potential discord around her arrival in Congress, said Joshua Dyck, a professor of political science at the University of MA at Lowell.

Keating, a former Norfolk County district attorney and state legislator, fended of a challenge from another democratic socialist, Bill Cimbrelo, in the 9th Congressional District, while U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano fell to Pressley in the 7th.

Voters in MA were choosing between incumbents and fresh faces in a Tuesday primary in which several members of the state's all-Democratic U.S. House delegation face spirited challenges. Kennedy, the grandson of the late U.S. Sen.

In Vermont, Democratic voters chose a "transgender woman" to be the party's nominee for governor, which is perhaps notsurprising from a state that sends the likes of Sanders to the U.S. Senate.

"At a time when our country is having trouble finding common ground on so many issues, we in MA are the exception", Baker told supporters. "We're in an age where people don't want to be moderate on both sides".

Pressley tapped into growing cries within the Democratic Party for newer, more diverse leadership.

In a recent interview at Tacos El Paso, a Mexican restaurant in Everett, she said she'd long idolized Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan, pioneering Democrats who were among the first black women in Congress.
