'Extremely Dangerous' Florence On Track to Hit East Coast As Major Hurricane

11 Septembre 2018

A westward motion with a slight increase in forward speed is expected through the end of the week. Latest forecasts have Florence making landfall in the vicinity of Wilmington, North Carolina Thursday evening/night.

Florence, now a Category 4 storm on the five-level Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, could approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday.

"Pretend, assume, presume that a major hurricane is going to hit right smack dab in the middle of SC and is going to go way inshore". "And when it hits the Gulf Stream in warmer water, it's going to [intensify] even more".

Hurricane Florence has been upgraded to a major category 4 hurricane as of noon on Monday.

As Hurricane Florence approaches the East Coast of the United States, the governors of Virginia, North and SC have issued mandatory evacuation orders affecting hundreds of thousands of residents in coastal areas. "But we're willing to suffer some inconvenience". The first shows the probability of tropical storm force winds and the second map shows the probability of hurricane force winds.

The evacuation will begin, Tuesday, September 11 at 8:00 a.m.

More inland at the University of SC in Columbia, Leah Kaczmarek is seeing people from the coast driving there to seek shelter.

"Build an emergency kit with a minimum of 3-days of supplies for each family member (food, water, medication)", the post states. North Carolina seems to be the state that could bear the brunt of the winds, along with SC and parts of southern Virginia.

Just had calls with South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam regarding the incoming storm. The hurricane is about 580 miles SSE of Bermuda and 1,240 miles ESE of Cape Fear, North Carolina.

Meanwhile, US president Trump was forced to cancel one of his planned "Make America Great Again" rallies scheduled for Friday night in Jackson, Mississippi. He was due to campaign for Senate candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed.

If it reaches the feared category four status, it would be the biggest hurricane in the USA since Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

More powerful hurricanes also bring higher-than-average storm surges, which can destroy coastal property.

Two other storms were spinning in the Atlantic.

"We don't know what to expect with a Category 4 or 5", said Gelhaus.

In North Carolina, officials already had ordered some 250,000 residents and visitors to begin evacuating the Outer Banks barrier islands. Hurricane Florence is 750 miles southeast of Bermuda and is tracking west at 6 mph.

Hurricane-force winds are extending up to 65 kilometres from the storm's centre, while tropical-storm-force winds are blowing out at up to 240 kilometres.
