Trump urges ‘incredible’ people in Carolinas to take precautions for Hurricane Florence

11 Septembre 2018

Forecasters have warned of a life-threatening storm surge, along with the damage of a hurricane's high winds.

The Atlantic hurricane's maximum sustained winds have increased to almost 130 miles per hour (195 kilometers per hour), the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in an advisory issued at noon Eastern Time (1600 GMT).

Hurricane Florence is expected to grow into an "extremely dangerous" hurricane by Monday as it approaches the US East Coast, the National Hurricane Center said, urging residents to make preparations.

The New Jersey and DE coastlines will feel the effects from Florence by Tuesday afternoon regardless as swells increase and unsafe rip currents begin.

As of 11 a.m., Hurricane Florence is now a Category 3 storm, and is likely to strengthen.

Hurricane Florence appears to be taking aim at the largest U.S. Marine Corps base on the East Coast.

Since the hurricane has already amassed wind speeds of 130 miles per hour, the coast could see life-threatening wind, rain, and storm surges.

"As we have seen with hurricanes in most recent years, such as Lane in Hawaii earlier this summer and Harvey last year in Texas, feet of rain can fall when these tropical storms stall", Sosnowski said.

The storm is now tracking to make landfall around Wilmington.

Henry McMaster, governor of SC, warned the U.S. should be braced for the hurricane to hit.

Lining up behind Florence, Isaac was about 1,150 miles (1,855 kilometres) east of the Windward Islands with top winds of 75 mph (120 kph) early Monday, moving west at 14 mph (22 kph).

Only ten hurricane have made landfall on the Southeast coast since 1851, and if Florence hits North Carolina as a Category 4 it will be the strongest storm to ever come ashore that far north. People were told to prepare to evacuate communities up and down a stretch of coastline already identified as particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change.

As of noon ET Monday, Florence was moving at 13 mph, some 575 miles south-southeast of Bermuda the hurricane center said. "I plan to do most of my cooking on the grill".

Arnold also captured hurricanes Isaac and Helene lining up behind Florence in the Atlantic. Now tracking in the Atlantic Ocean southeast of the USA mainland, "A turn toward the northwest is forecast to occur late Wednesday night", the latest NHC dispatch stated.

"The Department of Defense is working very closely with the Department of Homeland Security and is prepared to assist FEMA and our other Federal partners in supporting the States impacted by the storm", Manning said.

Both Tropical Storm Isaac and Tropical Storm Helene are expected to reach hurricane strength but neither is considered a threat to Bermuda.
