After people responded with questions, Musk weighed in and confirmed that the render of the Big Falcon Rocket, which is still in development, is new and "intentionally" created to resemble one seen in a classic Tintin comic.
The moon hasn't seen any human visitors since 1972 and NASA's last Apollo mission.
The Japanese billionaire is most famous outside Japan for his record-breaking $110 million purchase of an untitled 1982 Jean-Michel Basquiat painting.
Maezawa, an art lover and collector, said that he will take six to eight artists with him.
Mr Maezawa, 42, said he wants his guests for the lunar orbit "to see the moon up close, and the Earth in full view, and create work to reflect their experience".
"Ever since I was a kid, I have loved the Moon", Maezawa said at SpaceX headquarters and rocket factory in Hawthorne, California, in the middle of metropolitan Los Angeles, late Monday. The 180-foot-long (55 m) spaceship can accommodate 100 people, but SpaceX wants to keep numbers way down on the lunar flyaround, Musk said.
While Tesla has been plagued by production problems, SpaceX, which is also led by president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell, has been far more stable, churning out 34 straight successful rocket launches over the last 20 months.
At an event at Space X's headquarters in Los Angeles, Musk said, 'He's a very courageous person to do this'. "This is my lifelong dream", Maezawa said.
The billionaire said he wondered what would've happened if famous artists, painters, creatives, and songwriters had experienced what he wanted to experience.
The mission won't land on the surface of the moon but will ferry Maezawa and his artist crewmates around Earth's natural satellite.
When asked about the paid-for circumlunar navigation flight, Mr. Musk stated that the flight would be switching to BFR, would generally follow the same flight profile (free return trajectory), and would take place No Earlier Than 2019.
Cunningham's space flight in 1968 helped pave the way for human exploration of the moon.
The BFR's principal objective is to carry settlers and their stuff to Mars, 100 passengers at a time. You have to be pretty loaded to score a tourist spot on a spaceship.
"It's hard to say what Elon Musk can do".
The BFR is SpaceX's next generation spacecraft and launch vehicle system, set to be used along with the company's current suite of hardware like the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy.
Musk estimated it would cost $5 billion to build.
