Europe extends Ryder Cup lead to 10

30 Septembre 2018

Fleetwood, a long-haired, bearded Englishman, has been nicknamed by some fans "Ryder Cup Jesus". Europe pulled off such a comeback en route to a 14.5-13.5 victory at Medinah in 2012, and the USA overcame the same deficit in 1999 to win by the same score at the Country Club.

But this was no time to celebrate.

"Everything feels pretty good", Woods said when asked about how his body is holding up.

And now they have to do it by themselves.

Thomas Bjorn backed Rory McIlroy to thrive on the responsibility of leading Europe out in Sunday's singles with his side in prime position to regain the Ryder Cup.

Woods hasn't won any of his three matches.

"He wasn't wired by his dad for partner matches", said two-times major champion Johnny Miller on the American NBC telecast.

It was the first time Europe had won all four foursomes matches - having suffered a 4-0 reverse in the format en route to defeat in Hazeltine two years ago - and their first sweep in either format since 1989.

But the score should sound familiar, and it was enough to make them cautious.

Furyk may sound bullish, but Europe will be confident of preventing the USA avenging Medinah with a "Payback in Paris".

Fleetwood stopped the rot by holing a ten footer at the 12th and when the Americans failed to match Europe's birdie on the long 14th the contest was over.

Olesen was sent out in the first session Friday and hasn't played since. "But really need to be out there on the golf course, and I wanted to really kind of cheer on my team".

Even so, he couldn't contain a smile. One of the most inspiring and bold U.S. Ryder Cup players of recent vintage, Patrick Reed spent as much time in the rough as the thousands of boisterous spectators who loved taunting his every move at Le Golf National.

Trailing by two points after the opening-morning fourballs at Le Golf National, home captain Thomas Bjorn brought wildcard picks Poulter, Garcia and Henrik Stenson into the action, and the decision paid off in style. "It can go any way but we're really, really, really happy with how it's gone these first two days".

But he has rediscovered his best over the last four years, and has been in fine fettle this week, having nearly inspired a comeback against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas on Friday before reeling off five birdies in the first six holes Saturday.

McIlroy and Poulter were not in top form for this match-up but they started to cut loose in the closing stages.

Horschel though, would finish his round at -9 for the tournament, giving Woods the advantage heading into the final hole of the day, needing a double bogey or better to take the crown.

"I think Alex was a rock", said the Spaniard.

Poulter spoke only about his disappointment at not being able to personally follow-up on his Friday afternoon foursomes win, with McIlroy.

Thomas leads off the singles against McIlroy.

FedEx Cup victor Rose - who had slumped to defeat by Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau earlier in the day alongside Jon Rahm - put in a solid performance with Stenson which saw them storm 5-up after 11 holes and leave Johnson and Fowler with too much to do.

This isn't exactly what USA captain Jim Furyk was counting on from the player who was supposed to be his team's emotional fire starter.

Mickelson will have to shake off some rust.

Thankfully for Jim Furyk's squad, the Americans somewhat rallied in afternoon foursomes. "There's a few guys sitting out who you would normally see in the first session but they were very keen to play this afternoon and prove we are a team and we did it with all 12". They beat Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed, 4&3, and are 3-0 as a pairing so far in this Ryder Cup.

That wasn't enough to contend against "Moliwood".

"Where they come from, they can come from any match".

It was Woods' misfortune that he went up against Fleetwood and Molinari in each match.

Injuries prevented Woods from playing in the last two American victories, in 2008 and 2016. It helps the Americans that he's been paired with Jon Rahm, who appeared early to be feeling it, and Rory McIlroy.

For whatever reason, the Ryder Cup has always been a struggle for Woods.

"That's the frustrating thing about match play".
