Europe roars back, reclaims Ryder Cup in victory over U.S.

03 Octobre 2018

"I would gladly go 0-5 every Ryder Cup my entire career if that means we win every single time that we play".

In fairness to him, it might actually have been the only bad one Bjorn made in his entire captaincy, getting his reward as Europe overcame one slight wobble on the last day to record their biggest win in the event since an 18½-9½ triumph at The K Club in 2006. They beat Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed, 4&3, and are 3-0 as a pairing so far in this Ryder Cup. He lost convincingly to Finau in singles, but overall his week was grand. The other three knew a while ago they were in the team. Fleetwood, a long-haired, bearded Englishman, has been nicknamed by some fans "Ryder Cup Jesus".

All three went on to secure wins and Swedish rookie Alex Noren completed the day's action in style when he sunk a 40-foot putt to beat Bryson Dechambeau on the last and complete a 7.5-4.5 singles victory for Europe.

Italian Francesco Molinari fittingly took the glory as Europe regained the Ryder Cup from the United States in dominant style on Sunday, but it was a complete team effort that delivered what turned out to be a crushing 17.5-10.5 victory. They hit key shots and knocked in the clutch putts.

"He hasn't mentioned it to me and I wasn't there", said the Dane. I thought it was tight and I thought it was going to be really tight. It is going to sting for a while.

"At a U.S. golf course, you are looking at players like Thomas Pieters, who makes a lot of birdies".

First off, there will be rest.

The Americans, who haven't won in Europe since 1993, lead the all-time rivalry 26-14 with two drawn but the Europeans' ninth victory in the past 12 attempts gave them an 11-8 with one drawn edge since expansion from a British-Irish squad after 1977. A few hours later, when the entire team conducted a post-match news conference, Woods looked exhausted, as if he could fall asleep at any moment. Even if he had not won any points here, he's still won a lot of Ryder Cup points.

The deficit is one of the largest the USA have ever faced on European soil and Thomas Bjorn's men are now red-hot favourites to go on and win back the famous gold trophy.

It never carried over.

United States captain Jim Furyk spoke after a disappointing performance for his squad, "I'm proud of these guys, they fought". But Woods never brought that same speed and cohesion to the event.

The Ryder Cup is headed to Rome in 2022 and, in Molinari, Italy has its ideal poster boy.

Ask any European Ryder Cup player whether he would rather win a major championship or be part of a winning Ryder Cup team and, nearly to the man, he will tell you the Ryder Cup means more.

There's no shortage of drama going on in the world of golf lately. It makes sense if that is all he does.

"Any time you get to tee it up with Big Cat, it's always fun", Reed said when the pairings came out.

But if one living man personifies European golf, it's Olazabal. Just as Hazeltine's generous landing areas accommodated the Americans' bomb-and-gouge style in 2016, this was a track that perfectly highlighted the Europeans' strength: Six of their players ranked inside the top 82 in driving accuracy on the PGA Tour, while a whopping eight Americans landed in the bottom 82.

The point being, the Ryder Cup isn't like projecting a Masters leaderboard. Dustin Johnson had risen to world No. 1.

Woods accepts he is partly to blame for the defeat. So are the bodily aches he has endured along the way.
