"At 12.3" the Pixel Slate is not a device you can hold in one hand for prolonged time.
But is there really a demand for smaller handsets when everyone is going big?
The Pixel Slate is a strong first showing by Google, but it may need a little more than what it now has to offer in order to make any kind of dent in the Surface line's impressive hold of the 2-in-1 segment.
Both devices have a larger screen-to-body ratio than their predecessors, in addition to a glass front and back side and an edge-to-edge display. The stand can act as a charging part as well as keep showing the notifications on the phone's display screen.
The Pixel 3 has an FHD+ flexible OLED display at 443ppi, whereas the larger one sports a QHD+ OLED display (with a notch) at 523ppi. Its own aspect ratio is 18.5:9. However, receiving timely Android updates is not always the best for business and as we have seen over the past several months many of Google's releases have been buggy with lots of issues that the enterprise does not need to deal with just to gain some minor feature. Google's pricing strategy for the Pixel Slate seems rather odd, as the same device can also be found for a whopping $1,599 and decked out with the latest Intel Core i7, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. The Slate's 12.3-inch display has a 3K x 2K resolution which translates into 6 million pixels or 293 ppi.
The folio back flap pulls double duty as a cover and a stand, allowing you to use the Slate at nearly any angle. We've been impressed with all the Snapdragon 845 devices we've seen in 2018, but we're acutely aware that the next generation of hardware is just around the corner. When your phone rings, you'll be able to summon Google Assistant with the tap of a button and have Duplex ask callers their name and goal.
With the Google Pixel Slate, unveiled on Tuesday, we finally know how Google is planning to light a fire under the now quite boring non-iOS tablet market. Many other phones already have similar hardware for security.
The Pixel 3 faces continued limited sales in the United States since Google again signed an exclusive distribution deal with wireless carrier Verizon Communications Inc that means the device will get little marketing from other carriers. One thing the company didn't mention, though, was the new Chromecast.
The Google Pixel Slate doesn't come with headphones, but does support Bluetooth pairs or wired models that use a USB-C connector. This adds to the sleekness as well as simplicity of the Pixel 3. The Pixel 3 starts at $799 and the Pixel 3 XL starts at $899.
There are a bunch of new camera features such as Top Shot - an AI system that takes multiple pictures and selects the one where everyone is at their best (eyes open, smiling etc.).
In short, it looks like a very useful product that pulls together a series of useful functions and strengthens Google's position in what is a rapidly growing market. This was done not only through optics and improved hardware alone, but thanks to Google's AI-enabled software as well. The fingerprint reader still resides in the centre of the rear of the device, though. This will let you pinch zoom to a wider view, so you can get everything into the frame. Trust us, when it comes to taking group selfies, whoever is holding the Pixel will be doing the honours, and we're expecting great things here. There's support for some third-party apps like Spotify but Google doesn't have the same vast range of functions created for Amazon's all-conquering Alexa. I'd expect the Pixel 3 XL to achieve results to within 5% of the numbers in the graph below.
