Turkish authorities to search Saudi consulate after dissident journalist vanishes

I texted a few friends to inform them, and I asked about Jamal at the consular building. A former Muslim Brotherhood member who befriended Osama bin Laden but later condemned his violence, Khashoggi became a leading proponent for Arab reform-some of the same reforms, in fact, that MBS has spearheaded as part of his Vision 2030 campaign for the kingdom.

The official said that a security delegation consisting of Saudi investigators arrived in Istanbul on Saturday to participate in the investigations into the disappearance of Khashoggi.

The unnamed woman, who is a Turkish citizen, called police when Khashoggi did not emerge at 5 p.m., after the consulate had officially closed. Though wary of each other, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have traditionally tried to avoid public spats.

The Washington Post reports a Turkish investigation has revealed that a group of about 15 Saudi men traveled to Istanbul to kill Khashoggi as he visited the consulate.

They allege he was tortured, killed and cut into pieces.

Fifteen Saudi agents had arrived on two charter flights last Tuesday, the day Khashoggi disappeared, the official said.

Journalists and activists gathered outside the Saudi consulate on Monday demanding information on Khashoggi's fate.

The Saudi government has denied the accusations of murder, saying Khashoggi left the consulate.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump said he didn't know anything about the reports, but that he will be speaking to Riyadh officials. A search would be an extraordinary development, as embassies and consulates under the Vienna Convention are technically foreign soil and must be protected by host nations.

What evidence has been released?

Khashoggi went to the Saudi consulate on Tuesday to get documents for his forthcoming marriage.

The newspaper said "a person close to the investigation" had shared the image with them. Security footage shows boxes were loaded into the van.

Previously the crown prince told Bloomberg that Riyadh would be ready to welcome Turkish officials to search the premises.

Why is worldwide law a factor? The suspects are wanted by Turkish authorities for questioning. "The free world deserves answers", Pence said on Twitter.

This could in theory make it possible to smuggle goods - or potentially a body - out of the country. It remained unclear when the search would take place.

Before Khashoggi's disappearance, U.S. intelligence intercepted communications of Saudi officials discussing a plan to capture him, according to a person familiar with the information.

But Erdogan himself has not publicly accused Saudi Arabia of killing Khashoggi. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has demanded that the Saudis provide evidence proving their claim.

The crown prince said Khashoggi left the building not long after he entered. "It is [the duty] of the consulate officials", Mr Erdogan said this week.

"If he left, you have to prove it with footage. You have to prove it".

Mr Hunt said that if reports of Mr Khashoggi's death proved correct, the United Kingdom would regard the situation as "serious", adding: "Friendships depend on shared values".

"We agree that if there was any truth to the allegations of wrongdoing by the Saudi government it would be devastating to the US-Saudi relationship and there will be a heavy price to be paid - economically and otherwise", Graham tweeted.

"That's a pretty drastic step, but this is also a pretty drastic case".
