Democrats signal they want to investigate Jeff Sessions' ouster and replacement

Marijuana reform advocates have generally applauded the announcement of Sessions' resignation, as the now former attorney general has a long history of demeaning cannabis consumers, disregarding research about the benefits of medical marijuana, and upholding federal prohibition.

Rosenstein had the role of supervising the probe because of Sessions' recusal.

In the letter, the group of state attorneys general note that Rosenstein appears to have adequately overseen the Russian Federation probe and "should continue to do so, as Mr. Mueller's work must proceed free from interference or supervision that would appear to many Americans to be biased". It's a job he knows well given that Whitaker has spent the previous year as Sessions' chief of staff.

Mueller's probe has since reached plea deals with or indicted a number of Trump associates. The Trump administration is going to be investigated over Russian Federation, taxes, voter ID laws, any aspect of this White House the Left hates was going to be put under the microscope now that Democrats have retaken the House.

It was Clovis, no stranger to TV and radio himself, who encouraged Whitaker to get a regular commentary gig on cable television to get President Donald Trump's attention, according to friends who Whitaker told at the time.

The move places the investigation in jeopardy, as Whitaker has previously expressed deeply critical views of it and may seek to end it altogether.

At a protest in support of Mueller outside the White House, a crowd of several hundred protesters shouted anti-Trump slogans. "There is no mistaking what this means, and what is at stake: this is a constitutionally perilous moment for our country and for the president".

Progressive activists denounced Whitaker as a political operative.

In the House of Representatives, the senior Democrat on the Intelligence Committee - which Democrats will control from January - sounded the alarm.

However, there's also an argument to be made that Sessions' departure from the office could ultimately pose threats to the legal cannabis movement.

With the midterms over, Special Counsel Robert Mueller is believed to be preparing fresh indictments against Trump campaign figures, possibly including his son Donald Trump Jr. and a former campaign consultant Roger Stone, and could press for the president himself to answer questions.

In addition, few analysts dismiss the possibility that, if stifled, the conclusions of the Mueller probe will leak into the public.

In a Twitter message, the medium he often uses for dismissing subordinates, Trump announced on Wednesday that he had replaced Sessions with Matthew Whitaker whom he appointed acting attorney general.

The Democrats, who won the House in the mid-terms, have vowed to protect it.

In Washington, DC, protesters called on Democrat and Republican legislators to put partisan divisions aside to avoid the possibility of a constitutional crisis.

"Trump's attempts to sabotage the Mueller investigation are unacceptable, so we will be joining MoveOn and other groups in tomorrow's national protests", the group posted on Facebook.

"It is imperative that the Administration not impede the Mueller investigation", she tweeted.
