Republican Ron DeSantis, a former U.S. Representative backed by President Donald Trump, will be Florida's next governor, earning 49 percent of the vote on election night. If the margins remain under the 0.5 percent threshold, recounts must be ordered under state law.
Mainly, however, DeSantis defined himself as a contrast to the liberal Gillum. The margin is too slim for an official result, and may lead to a recount.
Election margins below half a percent trigger machine recounts in Florida. "Nelson will be declared the victor and will be returned to the Senate", Mr. Elias said. Fried now leads by just 575 votes as of Thursday afternoon, meaning this race will likely require a recount as well.
Gillum's campaign said it's monitoring the situation with an elections lawyer and preparing for a possible state-mandated recount. "Mayor Gillum started his campaign for the people, and we are committed to ensuring every single vote in Florida is counted".
Voters in Florida have a rare clear choice between a rock-solid conservative and a democratic socialist for governor. Any recount would probably begin Monday.
Both campaigns made demands Wednesday for details on all voters who cast provisional ballots Tuesday.
Blaise Ingoglia, chairman of the Florida Republican Party, slammed Nelson's assertions Thursday. "We believe that at the end of this process that Senator Nelson is going to be declared the victor and is going to return to the United States Senate".
A few precincts in Palm Beach and Broward, some of the few infamous Floridian counties that the 2000 presidential election's outcome hinged on, are still counting early voting and absentee ballots.
A complete summary of all Florida recount procedures can be found here.
Overseas ballots must be received by November 16 and have an Election Day postmark, based on Florida election rules.
Before then, election canvassing boards in each county will review provisional ballots to determine if they are valid.
"I'm unable to provide any identifying information on those persons who have voted a provisional ballot", Corley told Scott's campaign.
In Georgia, critics have drawn attention to Kemp's dual role as a candidate for governor and as supervisor of the state's elections in his capacity as secretary of state. "Right now, nobody knows".
The highly-decentralized nature of Florida election administration means that a hand recount will be fought out in 67 counties at once, as a second campaign marshals legal and political forces on each side's behalf.
"I would be dishonest if I didn't say this wasn't hard", he added.
DeSantis has been in the US House since 2012, and has a close relationship with President Trump. Over votes are ballots in which scanners detected that voters marked more than one choice for Senate.
