In the United States, the Democrats have manoeuvred to pass legislation with the support of new Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the only woman ever to serve as speaker.
Pelosi also administered the oath of office to members of the most diverse new Congress ever.
Just 11 of those Democrats voted against Pelosi or voted "present" in their first vote as congressmen, including Rep. Conor Lamb (D-PA), who won a special election last April but took his first vote for speaker on Thursday.

To become Speaker requires the support of a majority of all members of the House who are present and voting, a threshold that could be as high as 218 votes.
"Go, kids! Go, kids!" the California Democrat said.
Republicans face their own internal battles as they decide how closely to tie their political fortunes to Trump.
"DHS is part of the federal government, they should be able to be funded as well", she said. He faced six "no" votes from his now-shrunken GOP minority.
