Elon Musk’s Mysterious Tweet Results in $35,000 Tesla Model 3

01 Mars 2019

This series of events was complicated by the fact that Tesla had earlier forecast an annualized output of the Tesla Model 3 in excess of 500,000 units between the fourth quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2020, giving Tesla the opportunity to argue that Musk was not tweeting out anything new, per se.

For $37,000 (around £28,000, AU$52,000) you can get the Range Plus model, which offers 240 miles per charge, top speed of 140 mph and a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds.

Tesla has fulfilled its long awaited promise to start selling a $35,000 auto, as it announced it would be closing stores and moving all sales online. The SEC says that while Tesla announced Musk's Twitter account would serve as a "means of announcing" news and information, the company had no procedures to make sure his comments would contain information needed to be disclosing in filings.

- The long-awaited $35,000 version of the Tesla Model 3 is finally rolling out in the United States. That will boost range and performance: the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive Model 3 range will rise to 325 miles, while the top speed of the Model 3 Performance will climb to 162 mph.

The store closures will come on top of a decision to cut 3,150 jobs, or about 7% of Tesla's workforce, announced in January. Excitement over the new low-priced sedan was sapped, however, after Elon Musk delivered disappointing news about Tesla's profitability prospects.

Shifting to online-only ordering will enable Tesla to lower the prices of all its vehicles by an average of about 6 percent, according to a blog post.

Earlier this year in the Q4 2018 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that we'd likely see the long-awaited "mass-market" $35,000 Tesla Model 3 enter production some time in the summer, completing the Tesla Model 3 lineup after almost two years of production. Tesla no longer discloses the number of reservations, but many analysts believe those on the list are still waiting for this cheaper version.

Thursday was the third time this year that Tesla lowered the price on the Model 3, which recently started at $42,900. And you get a "Partial Premium" interior, which restores the power seats, vegan synthetic leather, and a better audio system, among other features. It has already been a huge success for the company, with 63,359 Model 3 cars sold in the last quarter alone.

But the company's decreased capital expenditures throughout the year, which fell by 43 percent in 2018 to $2.32 billion, combined with pressure put on the firm to produce new technology by CEO Elon Musk who has promised a "full self-driving" Tesla by next year, places the firm under significant stress. A priority this year "is making service unbelievable at Tesla", he said. Could it be the big reveal of the rumored Model Y, or even the intriguing Tesla pickup truck?
