Trump blasts ‘anti-Jewish’ Democratic party, brands House resolution ‘disgraceful’

They "Hypnotized the world" and "It's all about the Benjamins" Omar had tweeted.

The Republican president spoke a day after the vote on a resolution originally meant to condemn anti-Semitism following controversial comments by Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar that instead became a broader anti-hate measure. She has yet to apologize for doing so. Omar, a Somali refugee who resettled in Minnesota, had sparked fiery debate with her repeated criticisms of Israel and how a powerful pro-Israel lobby in Washington exerts influence on United States politicians.

Omar's latest anti-Semitic comment prompted Congress to draft a resolution to address it. But the resolution was delayed by debate over the resolution's text. The final resolution made no mention of Omar and instead focused generally on all hate speech.

Republicans generally joined in the favorable vote, though almost two-dozen opposed the measure, one calling it a "sham". Republicans who voted against it complained it had been watered down. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y. "If that member had been a Republican, that member's name would be in this resolution and this resolution would be all about condemning anti-Semitism, and it would be done so forcefully".

"What I fear is going on in the House now is an effort to target congresswoman Omar as a way of stifling that debate", said Sanders, who is Jewish. "I think we deserve it".

For Democrats, this was the second time in a month they found themselves forced to answer questions about Omar's controversial comments about Israel.

"Dual loyalty?" Rep. Ted Deutch asked in a tweet.

Pelosi spoke a day after the House overwhelmingly passed an anti-hate resolution.

Democrats have been divided over how best to handle the uproar. "It's about these forms of hatred", Pelosi said.

Many Democrats objected that it was wrong to only condemn Omar's anti-Semitic statements when she herself has faced bigotry as a Muslim. Almost twice as many liberal Democrats say they sympathize more with Palestinians than with Israel (35% vs. 19%), and this has grown more extreme in just the last few years.

Another tactic taken up by Democrats is trolling for supposedly anti-Semitic comments by Republicans to deflect and dilute the attention on Omar.

In a statement this week, Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA said, "Branding criticism of Israel as automatically anti-Semitic has a chilling effect on our public discourse and makes it harder to achieve a peaceful solution between Israelis and Palestinians". But Republicans have seized on Omar's statements, and the resulting intra-party conflict, as a sign the Democratic Party is fractured. Omar apologised at the time.

"Omar is constantly accused of singling out Israel, but she doesn't single out Israel", Gold noted. "This was supposed to be awkward for Democrats because it was an unofficial rebuke of Rep. Ilhan Omar". Steyer, perhaps more than anyone, in fact, is known for advocating the impeachment of Donald Trump. A recent poll showed the majority of Democrat voters have moderate positions and reject the socialism of AOC. They're right - although calling for the destruction of the state of Israel or holding Israel to a double standard compared to other countries surely is. While most House Republicans also voted for it, 23 voted no. Iowa's Steve King voted present.

Pelosi made the remarks defending Omar just head of Thursday's House vote.

Democrats fought each other about exactly what the resolution would say.

"It is absolutely shameful that Nancy Pelosi and Leader Hoyer and the Democratic leaders will not put her name in a resolution on the floor and condemn her remarks and remove her from the House Foreign Affairs Committee", Cheney said.

"We are appalled, but not surprised, that President Trump has once again demonstrated dishonesty, hypocrisy, and willingness to use anti-Semitism and Israel as a political football".
