No. 12 Florida State Stuns No. 2 Virginia in ACC Tournament Semifinals

17 Mars 2019

Duke is 0-3-1 ATS in their last four versus the ACC and the under is 4-1 in their last five versus the ACC. And then there was Florida State at 12. Duke would win its first NCAA title two days later.

With everyone salivating over Duke (with Zion Williamson, finally) facing North Carolina ("Frankly my dear") in the ACC tournament semifinals on Friday, it should be noted that the Blue Devils and Tar Heels have played 22 times in the tournament.

No. 1 seed Virginia (29-3) fell 69-59 to No. 4 seed Florida State (27-6) in the 2019 ACC Tournament Semifinals on Friday night at the Spectrum Center.

Clinches the Seminoles' third-ever ACC title game appearance, and first since winning the league crown in 2012.

Florida State lost 65-52 on the road in the only meeting against Virginia this season, but that was all the way back on January 5.

Ties a school record for wins in a single season.

Coach Roy Williams called for the same pick-and-pop play that forced overtime at Miami.

Now, UNC can only rest and wait to see if it has done enough to earn a No. 1 seed. "We've got six more games, hopefully".

The best seed for a Big 12 team figures to be a No. 3, and Texas Tech and Kansas look like the top candidates.

"He adds a different dimension to their team", UNC's Cam Johnson said of Williamson's return. "It accentuated the gulf between Williamson and every other prospect in college basketball".

Syracuse, always a tough out in March because of that tricky 2-3 zone, has some impressive wins this year and some really questionable losses. The superstar finished with a game-high 31 points, including the go-ahead bucket with 31 seconds remaining to save Duke from a season sweep by the Tar Heels.

However, Florida State recaptured the momentum of the game to put some distance between themselves and the Cavaliers as they went up 62-49 with 6:43 to go. The Jayhawks' loss to Iowa State in the conference tournament final may have ended that possibility. "That's a well-coached, good team".

They rank an impressive 14th in the nation in overall efficiency, and their 76 points a game (top-100 ranking) is a score-by-committee-style offense. Senior big man Antonio Vrankovic was not expecting to play. A guess at the leaders: Virginia, Duke, Gonzaga, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and Michigan State.

Against the Cavaliers, it was Nichols' turn to wear the cape. Fast forward to the rematch and the Seminoles shot 56.5% for the game and outrebounded UVA 36-20. RJ Barrett added 15 points, seven assists and eight rebounds for the Blue Devils in that one as well.

Florida State broke open the game midway through the second half with a 13-1 run led by Nichols, a graduate transfer who scored on a drive, a low post move, and a turnaround jumper during the stretch.

Mfiondu Kabengele hit a pair of free throws a second later to extend the lead to three possessions.
